TEFA FUNDING: WHY SOME FAMILIES WILL RECEIVE $10,000 INSTEAD OF $2,000

Texas families now have a new way to fund their child’s education through the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program. But many parents may not realize that how they apply can significantly affect the amount of funding they are eligible receive.

The deadline to apply for TEFA funding is March 17, and understanding the options now can make a big difference.

TEFA Funding: Homeschool vs Private School

One of the most important details of the TEFA program is the difference between homeschooling and enrolling in a participating private school.

  • Homeschooling families may receive around $2,000 per student.
  • Families enrolling in an approved private school may qualify for approximately $10,000 or more per student.

Many families assume private school means rigid schedules or less flexibility. However, some accredited online private schools combine flexibility with personalized learning.

A Flexible Online Private School Option

Christa McAuliffe Academy School of Arts & Sciences (CMASAS) is an accredited online K–12 private school that has served families worldwide for more than 17 years. CMASAS has recently been approved as a TEFA provider and has opened a new Texas office in Midlothian.

The school offers a personalized, mastery-based learning model where students learn at their own pace with guidance from experienced educators.

Each student receives a Personalized Education Plan (PEP) tailored to their learning style, goals, and interests, supported by both course instructors and personalized education coaches.

Helping Texas Families Navigate TEFA

To help families understand the new program, CMASAS will host a Grand Opening and TEFA information event at its Midlothian office on May 7, 2026.

Families attending can:

  • Learn how TEFA funding works
  • Explore personalized online learning options
  • Ask questions about eligible expenses and enrollment at CMASAS
  • Meet the CMASAS team
