This week's Food For Thought comes from online school co-founder, Tamra Excell. Read more about Tamra and her mission to create a personalized education for all students on her website here.

How much control do you feel over your own life? Are you in the driver’s seat, or do you feel like you are being taken for a ride?

A recent conversation with a student who graduated from CMASAS touched my heart. He said that his only regret is that he didn’t find the school sooner because he feels that he would have been even farther in life. He wasn’t talking about academics – he’s solid there – but in feeling in control over his life.  He’s ahead of the game compared to most, and he gratefully contributes much of this to his time at CMASAS because he feels he has solid educational foundation to build upon.

So what did our online school offer that was so important to this student and his experience in school?

Respect. At CMASAS, we actively give and show students respect in a number  ways. We give respect through the active nurturing of each student’s own personal agency.  We respect students by allowing them to have a voice in what happens in their own education, setting the stage for having power over their own life.

At first glance, people see that our online school has a huge catalogue of classes and offers things like school clubs and world travel. Which is all nice. However, it’s our online school’s learning model – the philosophy – that makes the difference in our student’s lives.

We treat our students as the adults-in-the-making that they are, celebrating individual choices, and respectfully mentoring them toward the future they want to create for themselves.

At CMASAS, we believe that education shouldn’t be an assembly line or a check list. Students should definitely be given the freedom and respect to participate in curating, designing and controlling their own educational process.

So how about you? Are you in the driver’s seat? This is your journey; where do YOU want to go? What, if anything, stands in your way? You can always step into a remarkable future.
