No one in their right mind could ever call Michael Phelps ordinary. To date, he is the most decorated Olympian of all time. Some might say it’s due to his extraordinary talent, but his coach, Bob Bowman, says it’s largely due to Phelps’ unshakable psychology.
Many of our online high school students come to us because they have a dream they’d like to turn into a profession. They’ve been bitten by the bug of extraordinary ambitions, and they’re looking for an education that will prepare them not only with facts and history lessons, but with the indomitable psychology of a winner.
According to @VYBO’s video “Michael Phelps: Psychology of a Winner,” Phelps’ greatest tool in cultivating this champion’s mindset is visualization. Coach Bowman says he visualizes every scenario-- not just the perfect swim, but what he would do if his cap breaks or his goggles snap. He runs through and visualizes each outcome, so that on competition day, he’s ready to press go and run with whatever comes his way. This process of deep visualization allows him to adapt to any situation, leaving him able to allot every ounce of energy to the race.
What dream do you want to turn pro? Today, take a moment and visualize: what does that look like? What does it feel like? How did you get there? Success is not just about putting in the hours. It’s also about the psychology you use to get yourself to the champion’s podium.
