How do you view social media? Is it a distraction? A source of joy and inspiration? A scourge against in-person people skills? In their video entitled “The Power of Social Media: Connecting for Good”, The Case Foundation outlines all the ways social media is evolving our culture. “Right now, there are more people on Facebook than there were on the planet two hundred years ago.” The question The Case Foundation posits is this: what if we harnessed the immense energy charging this new era of connection to change the world for good?
Contrary to what some sceptics say, social media is not just self-centered. The Case Foundation says the act of simply sharing helps create connection with others around the globe. “We share what we love, and it reminds us what we all have in common.”
Connectivity throughout the world can have staggering benefits for those who want to change it. In 2013, @CaseFoundation uncovered that “96% of nonprofits have a presence on Facebook. Yet 96% allocate only a quarter to a half of a full-time employee to manage their online activities.” This statistic is shifting, but the full power of social connectivity remains largely untapped.
What do you want to do to improve the world? We’d love to hear it! The magic of social media is realizing you have an entire network of helpers at your fingertips. You just haven’t met them yet.
“10.5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day. What if that human energy could be channeled for good?” - The Case Foundation
