Meet the Staff: History and Languages Teacher Daisy Cheatham

Here on the blog, we're starting a series introducing our teachers and staff. These highly trained, accredited, passionate individuals are all who makes CMASAS a truly excellent online school. Today we're pleased to introduce you to Daisy Cheatham.

Hi Mrs. Cheatham! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I currently reside in Colorado, but I'm a west coast girl. I grew up simultaneously in California & Oregon. I have two boys, Ash &Cyprus who are 10 & 7. In my free time, I like to read, write, cook, do yoga, hike, and watch movies. I am inspired by traveling and learning about other places & cultures.

Why do you love to teach?

I love to teach foreign language and culture. I love opening students' minds up to the endless possibilities the world provides.

What types of courses/grades do you teach at CMASAS?

I teach grades K-12. I teach Middle School history courses, and K-12 foreign language courses: Spanish, French, Italian, German...

Wow! That’s a lot! What inspired you to want to teach at an online school that emphasizes personalized education vs a site-specific traditional school?

I spent 5 years working for a brick & mortar private school, which was great but not exactly what I was looking for. I love the freedom and individuality of online personalized education and I am inspired by the students who attend this school. I feel that these students are unique individuals with passions and creativity that are lacking in traditional schools. I love that each student may set his or her own pace and rhythm.

Do you have a favorite experience with a CMASAS student that you can share with us?

I had a Middle School US History Student who hated writing & test-taking, but who was extremely knowledgable on the topic. He was planning a trip to the East Coast and was going to visit various landmarks, historical sites, and museums which encompassed the content of the course. Rather than take the tests and do the many writing exercises, we came up with a project that included all of the same topics but that allowed him to use his life experience, which is irreplaceable, to create a stunning project! It was a gratifying experience for both of us.

As an online school teacher, what does a typical day look like for you?

I typically take calls, have meetings, & answer emails in the mornings. Around midday, I have various club meetings or homeroom, depending on the day. In the afternoons, I grade work and answer more emails.

What is one dream you have for your students’ happiness and health that you enjoy encouraging them in?

I love helping students establish connections with other students & hopefully these will turn into life-long friendships. I love watching connections between students unfold across time zones and countries that would have never come to pass had they not enrolled in online school.

What is a goal or dream that you are currently working towards?

I am currently working on my first novel. I have always wanted to be a novelist!
