It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. - E.E. Cummings
One of the greatest challenges in life is discovering oneself and navigating the world around us in relation to our inner journey. Though each individual is born with certain personality traits, passions and gifts, personalities continue to be shaped by relationships, circumstances and experiences over time.
CMASAS is committed to helping students discover their personalities, learning styles, passions and dreams. Lately here on the blog we’ve been exploring and discussing our commitment to encouraging students on their journey of self discovery. In the spirit of the New Year, we discussed the value of goal setting and offered practical tips for teaching children to set goals. We shared how personalized education is meant to empower student voice and revealed our commitment to helping each student reach their highest potential and be set up to live remarkable lives.
Sadly school is often no more than an avenue for shoving information into a child’s brain. Though it is necessary and valuable to learn the basics of math, science, reading and writing, there is much more to be learned about life. Instead of hoping that children will “pick it up” along the way, we seek to play an active role in helping our online school students discover themselves. Research shows it’s important to get kids thinking early about what is important to them and why. Instead of producing chameleons who blend in to whatever situation they are in, CMASAS instructors and administrators seek to help students develop, celebrate and utilize their individuality and unique personalities.
As educators, we know that parents play the largest role in helping children and teens on the journey of self discovery. No one has greater influence over a child’s beliefs and behaviors than parents, which is why the CMASAS community it committed to supporting parents and offering resources and tools that will help in raising up children to live remarkable lives.
One resource we wish to offer to parents is a personality test and highly developed research tool called The Enneagram Institute. The Enneagram descriptions of personality are a respected and accurate tool for understanding ourselves. The model determines and describes with amazing accuracy a person’s basic personality type, the motivations behind their behaviors, their directions of growth and also tendencies of stress and disintegration. The free personality test, thorough website and several books on the Enneagram model have helped many students further discover themselves. It is also an excellent way for parents to learn about their children and uncover their strengths, motivations and trouble spots. Not only is the Enneagram a valuable too in learning one’s personality type, but it also helps individuals understand how they can healthily interact with others and engage with the world at large.
What are some of the tools that you use in an effort to learn about yourself? How have you succeeded in teaching your children about themselves and what more can be done? Know that you and your children are not alone on this journey of self discovery. It is a life-long process that is often best done within community. We hope that within the CMASAS community, you and your students will find the means and methods to live a life of prosperity and joy.
